Policy for Parallel Editions

We kindly ask our patrons to bear in mind that there are two parallel editions of St Gregory Palamas' Homilies/Sermons. The first edition, Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies, is intended for the student of theology — hardbound, with an introduction, detailed notes, indexes, etc. However, because MTP sees it as its raison d'être to make St Gregory available to a wider readership, we also offer this vast treasure of Orthodox theology and the spiritual life in another form.

Therefore, we also have a second edition, the series entitled, Sermons by Saint Gregory Palamas, which is a collection of many of the same homilies arranged thematically and without the notes, indexes, etc. It is hoped that this series, with its modestly priced volumes, will help to introduce the reader to the faith of the Fathers of the Church, and make St Gregory, and through him knowledge of the Orthodox spiritual life, available to a wider public.

A possible source of confusion stems from the fact that originally The Homilies began as a three-volume series -- only two volumes of which were actually published (in 2002 and 2004: there is no volume 3) -- but owing to a certain conjunction of circumstances, this has now been superseded by the abovementioned single-volume hardbound MTP edition of all sixty-three extant homilies.

Hence, Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies, includes the material that would have formed volume three of the originally intended series, and is, moreover, a revised edition of the entire corpus.

Saint Gregory Palamas

(1296-1359)

Our father among the saints Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica, was a monk of Mount Athos in Greece (at Vatopedi Monastery and Esphigmenou Monastery), and later became Archbishop of Thessalonica. He was a preeminent theologian and a proponent of hesychastic theology. His feast days in the Church are November 14 and the second Sunday of Great Lent as the Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas.

St. Gregory represents Orthodox theology at its most sublime. Patristic theology in the fourteenth century, of which St. Gregory is indubitably the greatest exponent, touched the very boundaries of theological expression.

St. Gregory’s sermons are among the finest in Patristic literature. In his treatment of the manifold themes contained therein, he is remarkably consistent in maintaining a balance between originality of thought and strict adherence to the tradition of his predecessors. Moreover, his genius  resides in the ease with which he demonstrates, as only a master of the spiritual life can, the refreshingly practical significance of the doctrines of the Church for the Life in Christ.

The Homilies

The first edition of all sixty-three extant sermons by St. Gregory to appear in English translation, presented together with an Introduction to the Homilies, over 1,000 notes and scholia, an index of Scriptural References, an index of Names and Subjects, and an index of Greek Words – designed to transform this remarkable treasury of Patristic wisdom into an invaluable reference resource for the student of theology.

“Saint Gregory gave to the Church what is surely the most complete synthesis and perfect formulation of the Apostolic tradition of all generations. His theology, in a charismatic and ‘existential’ way, recapitulates, in its entirety, the spiritual experience of the saints of the Old and New Testaments . . . The sermons of Saint Gregory Palamas, in spirited and uncomplicated idiom, render his entire life’s work accessible to the people of God. In fact, they form the most complete introduction not only to his theology, but to the theology of all the great Fathers of the Church.”
